Fenerbahçe challenges Osimhen’s participation in the derby against Galatasaray

Fenerbahçe have formally lodged a complaint with the Turkish Football Federation over the eligibility of Victor Osimhen to feature in an upcoming derby against Galatasaray, citing concerns about the striker’s protective equipment.

According to Turkish media reports, Fenerbahçe compiled a detailed technical dossier over several days before submitting it to the federation. The club argues that the protective gear worn by Osimhen following a recent injury could pose a risk to opposing players during physical contact.

The complaint focuses particularly on protective equipment worn on the arm, as well as additional body protection. Fenerbahçe contend that certain materials used may not fully comply with safety standards, despite existing regulations set by the International Football Association Board governing permissible on-field equipment.

Sources close to Osimhen have rejected the claims, maintaining that the equipment meets international safety requirements. Reports indicate the protective gear consists of a dual-layer design, featuring a rigid structure covered by a softer outer material intended to absorb impact.

They also noted that similar protective equipment is widely used by players recovering from injuries, with no prior restrictions imposed. The primary aim, they say, is to enable the player to return safely while minimising the risk of further injury.

The dispute adds further tension ahead of what is already one of the most high-profile fixtures in Turkish football. Osimhen is regarded as a key attacking player for Galatasaray, and his availability could significantly influence the outcome of the match.

The Turkish Football Federation has yet to issue a formal decision, with the matter now centring on the interpretation of safety regulations and the compliance of medical equipment used during competitive play.
