The Ogun State Waste Management Authority, OGWAMA, has sealed an automobile assembly company, Carry Heavy Industry Limited, over alleged illegal burning of waste materials in Ogun State.
The company, located in Moloko-Asipa near Abeokuta, reportedly specialises in the production of heavy-duty and passenger vehicles.
According to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Waste Management, Farouk Akintunde, the factory was shut down for violating provisions of the state environmental law that prohibits open waste burning.
Akintunde explained that the agency had repeatedly warned the company’s management to stop burning waste and instead engage government-approved Private Sector Participants, PSPs, for proper disposal.
He stated that the company’s actions caused environmental pollution through toxic emissions, posing health risks to workers and nearby residents.
The OGWAMA boss stressed that the Ogun State Government places priority on the wellbeing and safety of residents and would not tolerate practices harmful to public health.
According to him, the company will remain sealed until it complies with state waste management regulations and registers with approved waste disposal operators.
He also warned that stricter legal sanctions could follow if the company fails to comply.
In a related development, Akintunde disclosed that Camellin Industry Limited, located around the Sagamu Interchange axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, was also sanctioned over similar allegations of waste burning.
The agency said the company’s management has been invited for questioning as part of ongoing enforcement actions against environmental violations in the state.
