Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared Tuesday, June 17, 2026, a work-free day across the state to commemorate the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Monday and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Olanike Adeyemo, on behalf of the governor.

Makinde also extended his congratulations to the Muslim Ummah in Oyo State and across Nigeria on the occasion of the beginning of a new Islamic calendar year.

The governor urged Muslims to use the significance of the Hijrah celebration as an opportunity to pray for the continued peace, unity and prosperity of Oyo State and the nation at large.

He called on residents to reflect on the values of sacrifice, faith, tolerance and peaceful coexistence associated with the migration of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), which marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar.

Makinde further appealed to residents to remain vigilant and security-conscious throughout the celebration period, especially in light of prevailing security concerns in parts of the country.

He advised members of the public to promptly report suspicious movements, activities or individuals to relevant security agencies.

The governor specifically encouraged residents to make use of the state’s toll-free emergency number, 615, to provide timely information that could assist security operatives in preventing crime and protecting lives and property.

“He urged all residents of the state to remain vigilant and security-conscious before, during and after the Hijrah celebrations,” the statement noted.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to maintaining peace and ensuring the safety of residents through collaboration with security agencies and community stakeholders.

He also wished Muslims a peaceful and rewarding Hijrah celebration, expressing hope that the new Islamic year would usher in greater blessings, harmony and progress for Oyo State and Nigeria.

The Islamic New Year, also known as Hijrah, commemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madinah and serves as a period of reflection, gratitude and renewed commitment to faith among Muslims worldwide.
