IGP Orders Dismissal, Prosecution Of Officers Over Delta Killing

Share f X W in

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has said disciplinary action taken against ASP Nuhu Usman should serve as a strong deterrent to other officers.

The IGP made this known while addressing journalists after the fatal shooting of Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.

He described the officer’s conduct as criminal and a clear violation of professional standards.

According to him, the police acted immediately after receiving the report by transferring all officers involved from Delta State Command to Force Headquarters in Abuja.

He said the Force Disciplinary Committee handled the case, while other officers were tried through the Orderly Room Tribunal.

Findings from the investigation showed that ASP Usman violated Force Order 247, which regulates the use of firearms, as well as established operational procedures.

The IGP stressed that no suspicion against a citizen justifies extra-judicial killing.

He confirmed that recommendations have been made for the immediate dismissal of the officers involved.

He added that after dismissal, they will be handed over for criminal prosecution.

The recommendations have been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final approval.

Disu said the actions of the officers do not reflect the values of the Nigeria Police Force.

He reiterated that the police have zero tolerance for misconduct and that no uniform gives the right to take a life unlawfully.

The IGP also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that justice will be pursued.

He urged residents to remain calm and allow due process, adding that accountability within the force will be enforced.

The case continues to draw national attention as calls for police reform and accountability grow stronger.
