The Nigerian Army has confirmed that troops of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, successfully repelled an attack launched by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province terrorists on a military base in Maiduguri.

According to a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Lieutenant Colonel, the terrorists attacked the Forward Operating Base under Sector 3 in the early hours of May 7, 2026.

The military said the attackers attempted to infiltrate the camp under poor visibility conditions.

Although the terrorists reportedly breached a small section of the base, troops were said to have responded forcefully and succeeded in containing and defeating the assault.

The Army stated that several terrorists were neutralised during the encounter.

It added that follow-up operations around the area revealed blood trails, dragged bodies, and recovered corpses, indicating heavy casualties among the attackers.

Troops also reportedly recovered weapons and ammunition abandoned by fleeing insurgents, including PKT anti-aircraft guns, AK-47 rifles, and loaded magazines.

The Army, however, confirmed that two soldiers lost their lives during the battle.

An officer and other injured personnel are currently receiving medical treatment and are said to be in stable condition.

The military also disclosed that some equipment and temporary structures within the camp were damaged by fire during the exchange of gunfire.

According to the statement, troops have continued exploitation operations within the surrounding area to consolidate gains and assess the full extent of the damage inflicted on the terrorists.

The military high command commended the troops for their response and encouraged them to sustain operational pressure against insurgents in the North-East theatre.
