NLC Demands Urgent Action Over Oyo School Abductions, Rising Insecurity

Share f X W in

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has called on President Bola Tinubu and security chiefs to urgently tackle the worsening insecurity across the country following the recent abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State.

The demand was made by NLC President Joe Ajaero in a statement released on Wednesday.

The union reacted to the attack carried out by armed bandits on schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, where dozens of pupils and teachers were abducted.

The affected schools included:

• Community High School, Ahoro Esinele
• L.A. Basic School, Ahoro Esinele
• First Baptist School, Yawota

According to reports, at least 30 pupils and seven teachers were kidnapped during the coordinated attacks.

The incident sparked nationwide outrage after reports later emerged that one of the abducted teachers had reportedly been beheaded by the attackers.

Reacting to the situation, the NLC said governments at all levels must urgently wake up to their responsibility of protecting lives and property.

The labour union also urged security agencies to carry out serious internal evaluations regarding the country’s deteriorating security situation.

“Our security agencies should do a thorough soul-searching,” the statement read.

The NLC stressed that Nigerians are tired of repeated condolence messages and public sympathy without concrete action.

“We demand action now. We have had enough of sermons and condolence messages. For how long should we continue to bleed like this?” the union added.

The latest statement adds to growing pressure on authorities following increasing attacks on schools, kidnappings, and violent incidents across different parts of the country.
