Former presidential candidate and activist Omoyele Sowore has joined a protest in Aba calling for the release of detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
A video currently circulating on social media shows Sowore standing among demonstrators during the rally, which was organised to demand freedom for the controversial separatist leader.
Protest Held in Aba
The demonstration took place in Aba, where a group of supporters gathered to push for Kanu’s release.
The protest followed an earlier announcement by a coalition of Kanu’s supporters who had mobilised for a large-scale demonstration in the city.
“One Million March” Campaign
The protest was organised under the banner of the Coalition of Lovers of Freedom, a group advocating for Kanu’s release.
Supporters have tagged the rally a “One Million March,” hoping to attract widespread participation from people who share their cause.
Sowore’s presence at the protest quickly drew attention online, with many videos and photos from the event spreading across social media platforms.
Background of Nnamdi Kanu’s Conviction
It will be recalled that Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was convicted on several terrorism-related charges.
On November 20, 2025, a judge at the Federal High Court in Abuja delivered a verdict that found him guilty on multiple counts including incitement and membership of a proscribed organisation.
The judgment was delivered by James Omotosho after a lengthy legal battle that lasted nearly a decade.
The court sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment on several counts, while additional jail terms were imposed on other charges.

Clips from the demonstration continue to circulate online, showing crowds chanting and carrying banners demanding Kanu’s release while Sowore joined the procession.
The protest has since generated mixed reactions across social media, with supporters and critics expressing differing opinions on the development.
